FYE: (for your edification)

"Right" of passage means that you have the authority or permission to pass.

"Rite" of passage means a set of rituals, ceremonies, or actions, undertaken in order to mark the fact that one is passing from one stage to another.

In that case, both words apply. As Rex's father, I gave him my permission/ blessing to pass from an old boy to a young man. And I also created a ceremony to mark that passage.
