My view on the war in Iraq
I got an e-mail letter from Senator Tom Harkin telling me how he was going to be speaking on the senate floor during an "all night" session tonight to change the course of the war in Iraq. He said he was going to be reading letters by Iowans who are "overwhelmingly against the war in Iraq".
I guess I just had to speak my mind:
Senator Harkin,I just read your e-mail about the debate on the floor tonight regarding the war in Iraq.
I want to let you know that I have a brother and a nephew in the armed forces currently serving in Kuwait. I also have several personal friends serving or about to serve in Iraq. Lastly, a good friend of mine lost his father-in-law last year during hostile action in Iraq.Like so many Americans, this war is close to home for me, so let me be unequivocally clear: I support our nation's president and the war on terrorism through the current action in Iraq.
Why? Because recent terrorist attacks in Europe and attempts here in America demonstrate that if we were not fighting Islamic terrorism in Iraq, we would be fighting it right here. At least in Iraq we can shoot back!
Please stop trying to terminate the fighting prematurely and, as a result, bring terrorism home.
Thank you,

In this context, what does "do not fear what they fear, do not be frightened" mean?
Posted by: Steve O at July 18, 2007 04:15 PMCould you give me a chapter and verse for that? For sure believers do not fear death as unbelievers do, because our salvation is sure... in reality, we will live forever. So off the top of my head, that's what I would think.
Now, I do "fear" the affect that violence, panic, and bombs blowing off in the streets would have on my children and people for whom I love and for whom Christ died. I desire peace both within and without. Unfortunately, for Islamic terrorists, peace will only come on their terms... and their terms are "death to the infidel".

Tim,
Steve's verse is from Isaiah 8:12, and refers to what God told Isaiah to think about the coming Assyrian invasion. It has no meaning in this context. It is not a command for us.
I do believe, the larger principal that God points to, telling him to not be afraid, holds though:
"13 But the Lord of hosts, him you shall honor as holy. Let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. 14 And he will become a sanctuary and a stone of offense and a rock of stumbling to both houses of Israel, a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 15 And many shall stumble on it. They shall fall and be broken; they shall be snared and taken."
heh... unravel that one. :)
