A World of Hurt

Posted by Tim :: Ministry News

While in Chicago this summer, I've been shocked by the needs within the homes next to mine.
I'm in a subdivision in Warrenville, IL. which is comprised of middle-class homes, multiple car families, and free access to a really nice clubhouse with a swimming pool and the works. I didn't think that much about my neighborhood being a mission field. I was focused on UIC and downtown Chicago. But no matter where you go, people desperately need the Lord.
To our right, a family moved in over the summer. The parents of the wife have approached us twice now and urged us to reach out to their daughter. Their exact words where, "She could really use a friend."
Across the street, our kids have become good friends with this family. The first time I met the mom she shared with me how she is getting a divorce and has suffered from verbal abuse most of her married life. Her ex was still living with them until last week. She told me the kids have been asking her where daddy is. She is having a hard time explaining it to them.
Next door to them is a lonely elderly man. Kristen talked to him at length and he told her that his wife just up and left him. He's now waiting for the divorce papers to go through, so he can marry again. He said he can't stand living alone.
Then to the left of us is a family that unexpectedly lost their daughter when she died of a brain aneurism. Their 20 year old son told me, "Any bit of faith I had left was gone after that happened."

By God's grace, I have what these people need:
"The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion- to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor." Isaiah 61:1-3

Amen Tim.

We so often think the only "needy" people live in slums or some such. But they're everywhere. My wife was talking to our neighbor this weekend, for instance. They moved here from Croatia last year and the wife is working 60 hours a week as a cook and her husband is working even more hours as a mason, plus they are working hard renovating their house and it's causing a lot of stress in their marriage and she's worried about her teenage sons. She was crying telling my wife. My wife is going to try and get her a different job where she works with better hours and closer to home. We have other neighbors marital issues, health issues, financial issues, children issues. Part of my job is as a newspaper reporter covering the local courts. Everyday I see deaths, alcohol and drug addiction, incest, sexual assaults, fights, credit card fraud, robbery -- all in the suburbs, all committed by people imprisoned by sin. Broken families -- those of both the perpetrators and the victims -- crying in court rooms, going through the court system, a cold, dehumanizing meat grinding process.

People really need the Lord, indeed.
