More verses... ah ah ah ah ah

Posted by Tim :: Ministry News

[Did you ever notice that evil laughs backwards. It's true. The classic Count Dracula laugh is "ah ah ah" while normal humans utilize the traditional "ha ha ha". Just thought I'd share.]

Now on to the topic of memorizing Scripture:
I was very encouraged to see so many Rock leaders nailing their verses word for word. I hope you all enjoyed your worms... gummy worms that is. :- )

The spirit of the next set of verses captures the necessity to love one another. I was thinking that The Rock has no business dreaming about a permanent location in order to have a greater influence on the campus and city if that influence is a shallow, warped reflection of Jesus Christ. God is love, baby, love. If we are not able to love those in the family of God, what makes us think we can love anyone else?

So memorize (and live) this:
John 13:34-35 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

This is a classic verse that shows how integral love is to opening the eyes of a blind world to the reality of the presence of God. The world will not see the reality of Christ in the followers of Christ until they see a love in us that is not of this world. It's as "simple" as that, folks.

1 John 3:16-18 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.

This one gets me every time. To love like Christ sounds so nice and theoretical that it goes right over my head. In these verses, John lays it out there in such a practical way that I just can't blow it off.

Colossians 3:12-14 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

This is the kind of love that makes the world take notice… anything less than that will have an equally degenerative impact on each other and the world around us. Meditate on each description of our clothing. Living like this is the goal of our faith, for the closer we get to this kind of love the closer we get to Christ-likeness.

Since there are so many verses in each chunk of Scripture to memorize, I'll leave it at 3 this time. (I hope you're happy, Paul.)

Well there we have it, the material for my message this Friday.

Woo-hoo! This means that, already knowing the message, I can again skip the Rock in an attempt to land a hot date!
